The sanctions target the international network for “facilitating the shipment of millions of barrels of Iranian crude oil worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the People’s Republic of China,” the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement.
The oil was shipped on behalf of the Iranian Armed Forces
General Staff and a sanctioned front company called Sepehr Energy Jahan
Nama Pars, the Treasury Department said
.
“The Iranian regime remains focused on using its oil
revenues to fund the development of its nuclear program, to manufacture
lethal ballistic missiles, and to support its regional terrorist proxy
groups,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.
“The United States is committed to aggressively targeting
any attempt by Iran to obtain funding for these malign activities,” he
added.
The Treasury Department’s action follows President
Trump’s recent decision to reimpose what he called a “maximum pressure”
campaign on Iran over allegations that the country is seeking to develop
nuclear weapons.
Trump signed a memorandum on Tuesday (February 4)
reimposing tough sanctions on Iran, similar to those he imposed during
his first term, adding that he hoped he would not “have to use them too
often.”
The memorandum instructs every department of the U.S.
government to draft sanctions against Iran, particularly those related
to its nuclear activities, a White House aide said when briefing Trump
at the signing ceremony
